Welcome to The Butchers Arms

The Butchers Arms is a traditional free house pub lying in the heart of ‘Cider With Rosie’ country in the beautiful Sheepscombe valley near Painswick in Gloucestershire.

Although we are well known for our traditional home cooked food, “The Butchers” is still very much a village pub and you are equally welcome to drop by for a pint of real ale or a glass of wine. The area is a magnet for walkers, cyclists and tourists and attractions such as the Rococco Gardens and Prinknash Abbey are just a short drive away. Strolls in the local woods can be as long or leisurely as you wish and the less energetic can drink in the panoramic scenery from our garden terrace.

Bar & Dining

We pride ourselves on our freshly home-cooked, ‘no nonsense’ dishes, using locally grown or reared produce wherever possible.  Our traditional pub classics menu changes twice yearly to reflect ‘Light Nights’ and ‘Dark Nights’.  However we always have some variety on our ever changing Specials Board and Pie of the Week offering.

Excellent pub food

“We were staying in the village and booked a couple of hours in advance. We were greeted on arrival and shown to a table in the side bar. Plenty of space between tables. Atmospheric place. The staff were stretched, but maintained service with a smile. The food was simple pub fare from good ingredients. Portions are big. We were happy.”

Perfect venue to meet up with my colleague for lunch

“Had an excellent meal here with a colleague – it was a great halfway venue for us to spend some time together. Food was excellent with a great selection and service was top notch. Highly recommended!”

Great, secluded country pub that do things properly - exactly what you want in a pub.

“Having been a handful of times, the consistency is on point.
Everything from booking, the welcome, general customer service, food, variety of drinks and overall feel at this lovely and secluded country pub is great!
Beef and Stilton pie – a favorite in our house, the roasts are great and guest beers are plenty!!

Lovely people, lovely food.

“Had a lovely lunch here, the people are lovely. All of the Covid regulations are in place. The food was really affordable. I would highly recommend”

Amazing (COVID safe) country pub

“This is a beautiful country pub serving amazing food. My husband had the steak pie and he tells me that it was the best steak pie he has ever had. The food was so good that we returned for traditional Sunday roast lunch which was also fabulous. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The arrangements which were in place to ensure the facilities were COVID safe were excellent and could not be faulted. As tourist who is new to the area the drive to the pub along single track roads is not for the faint hearted!! We will certainly return if we visit the Cotswolds again.”

Superb food in a proper Cotswold pub

“Superb food in a proper Cotswold pub with amazing hosts. Look no further …. book ahead though. We were greeted and taken to our table promptly and given menu options. My husband had the lentil curry soup… ( I had food envy) he let me taste it !!! All our food was lovely. Our only mention is that the pub is on a single track road. If you come at it from birdlip it’s best because from painswick it’s not a pleasure! Worth the trek though x thank you to a great team !”

First visit to Gloucestershire

“We booked a table for an evening meal, we also took two dogs with us. The staff were very attentive and the service was in good time. The food was excellent and very filling, good portion sizes and good value for money. The dogs got a little treat and staff welcomed them lovingly. A bit of a country drive to get there with narrow winding roads but we’ll worth the trekk.”

After walk lunch

“After a long walk uphill and down dale we arrived at the pub for lunch. We had a lovely table by the window looking out on to the lane. We had prompt service with both drinks and food. The beer was of a high standard. The food menu was both varied and well priced. We had a lovely meal which really finished off a brilliant day in the Cotswolds.”

Amazing Countryside Pub

“The Pub is in a stunning location, small village of Sheepscombe. The single track road is not for the faint hearted. Horses were tied up outside. The Covid arrangements were meticulous. The menu was extensive and food was homemade. I had delicious Lasagne with Salad and Garlic bread and my husband had Pork and Leek Sausages with Mash and Onion Gravy. The food was excellent and I would highly recommend a visit if in the area.”

Great (Covid safe) pub meal

“From the moment we booked until we left the service was exceptionally good, and friendly. Everything was well laid out and organised to make us feel relaxed and safe (Covid-19). I had the most delicious Steak, Ale & Stilton Pie in this beautiful Cotswold Pub. A great selection of real ales and draft beers. If you’re in the area, do pop in, you’ll not regret it.”
