One of the joys of visiting The Butchers Arms is that some of the Cotswolds’ most picturesque footpaths begin right from our door.

Whether you fancy a gentle stroll through woodland or a full day out exploring rolling valleys and iconic landscapes, our collection of six circular walks offers something for every pace and every season.

We’ve created a handy walking leaflet with maps and directions – just ask for a copy at the bar when you pop in. In the meantime, here’s a taste of each route.

1. Far End – 1 mile (Easy)

Perfect for a short stretch of the legs before lunch or after a pint, this gentle loop shows off Sheepscombe’s charm without taking you too far from the pub. Expect peaceful lanes, pretty cottages and a simple, relaxed walk that suits all ages.

2. Saltridge Wood – 2¼ miles (Fairly Easy)

A lovely way to experience the tranquillity of the valley, this route takes you into beautiful woodland alive with birdsong. With only mild inclines, it’s an ideal choice for a slow weekend wander or an early evening walk before dinner.

3. Cranham – 4 miles (Moderate)

This classic walk links Sheepscombe with the neighbouring village of Cranham, offering sweeping views across the hills and a mix of woodland paths and open countryside. It’s a rewarding mid‑length walk that feels wonderfully rural.

4. Foston’s Ash & Cranham – 6 miles (Moderate)

A longer loop for those looking to stretch their legs a little further. This route combines scenic woodland, peaceful commons and varied terrain, making it a great choice for walkers who enjoy a few climbs followed by a well‑earned drink back at the pub.

5. Painswick – 7 miles (Moderate)

A picturesque route connecting Sheepscombe to Painswick, “The Queen of the Cotswolds.” Enjoy rolling landscapes, charming architecture and classic Cotswold views along the way. Bring a camera — this is a particularly photogenic walk.

6. Cotswold Way – 13 miles (Strenuous)

For the keenest walkers, this full‑day adventure takes in part of the famous Cotswold Way. Expect big views, big hills and a real sense of achievement. Ending the journey with good food, a pint or a cosy seat by the fire at The Butchers Arms makes it even more rewarding.
